Rotary Adventure in Citizenship Forum

About the Canberra Adventures in Citizenship RAIC

This Forum is conducted by the Rotary Club's of Canberra-Woden and Canberra and run in partnership with the National Capital Authority and the Parliamentary Education Office.

Each year around 35 year 11 students are nominated and sent by their local participating Rotary Clubs to Canberra to gain knowledge and experience in how our National Parliament operates ."Delegates are taken out of their Comfort zones into new places, set amongst new faces and asked to do new things.  They also spend a lot of time inside Parliament House in areas not usually open to the public.

During the week of Rotary Adventures in Citizenship (RAIC) delegates go  inside the National seat of Power, often having morning tea with the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House Of Representatives. They view Question Time and are debriefed by a journalist from the Press Gallery. They learn the difference between a Bill and an Act

Delegates participate in mock Parliamentary Debates themselves and visit national Institutions (War Memorial, Institute of Sport ), in a way that is more revealing than the usual school excursion can provide.

And most importantly they meet and make friends with young people from all over Australia - Delegates from previous years have said this is one of the highlights of the RAIC program.

Our Sponsored Student at 2014 Adventure in Citizenship
Held over the week 10th May to 17th May 2014 , the Engadine Rotary Club sponsored  Jessica Yeats, a year 11 student from Engadine High School.   In the June issue of the High School's Flannel Flower magazine pages 15/16,  Jessica has provided an extensive and detailed report on her attendance.  From that report the following extracts have been taken for this page. She reports " From May10th-17th, I attended the "Rotary Adventure in Citizenship" program. When People asked me how I enjoyed my week I felt like saying great was not doing it justice. I can say that what I learnt and experienced in those seven days was undeniably incredible " She finished her report by writing "Thank you to Engadine Rotary who paid all expenses of the week ,and also to Engadine High School for opening me up to the opportunity. RAIC was a busy yet overwhelming enjoyable experience and I would sincerely  recommend it to next years year 11 students " .    Great report Jessica - Well done Best wishes for your future endeavours
Our 2013 Sponsored Student
In May 2013, Rotary sponsored Kyle Richardson of Engadine High school. Kyle provided a report to the Engadine High Flannel Flower magazine extracts of which follow.
“ I attended Rotary Adventure in Citizenship (RAIC) 2013 from Saturday 11th May – Saturday 18th May in Canberra….. Thirty-six students attended this year. It’s an event sponsored and coordinated by Rotary International. I was offered this by  the Rotary Club of Engadine, in conjunction with Engadine High School. I stayed with a host family while I was in Canberra. The host family were Rotarians themselves (Canberra Rotary).
Whilst on RAIC 2013 a number of people from the Federal Parliament addressed us. These included: Anna Burke – the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Jon Hogg – the President of the Senate, Senator Claire Moore, and the youngest ever Member of Parliament Wyatt "

We did a public tour of Parliament House, and for the rest of the week we were in private and security areas. We toured Old Parliament House, the High Court of Australia, visiting all 3 rooms, the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), the US Embassy, the Australian War Memorial, where we did a wreath laying ceremony and watched the last post which is played at 5pm daily, and the Royal Military College Duntroon, in which we also had dinner with some Cadets. I found the Australia War Memorial and the Royal Military College Duntroon particularly interesting.
Rotary Adventure In Citizenship 2013 was absolutely brilliant and a fantastic experience. I wish to thank Engadine Rotary Club for their very generous sponsorship.
