What is RYLA
One  of the most popular of Rotary's Youth  programs and probably its second oldest , RYLA caters  for young people  aged 19 to 25.
It is a  week-long residential personal development program , which focuses on yourself, leadership and community.
RYLA aims to: -
  • Give young people the chance to come together in a supportive environment to gain a better understanding of their own strengths and the unique qualities and abilities of others
  • Provide an opportunity for young people to develop a network of resources to facilitate their roles and development.
  • Facilitate learning about teamwork, communication, motivation and to develop the leadership skills of young people through experiential workshops.
  • Create a greater awareness of social issues affecting young people and
  • Demonstrate Rotary's commitment to young people.
Everyone’s experience of RYLA is unique. What you can expect though, is to meet people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and to hear from a series of speakers, all with different perspectives on leadership, personal development and community
Some speakers will challenge you and what you believe, but hopefully some will also connect with you, or inspire you.
RYLA assumes that 'leadership' is a diverse and varied concept and any one form or style of leadership is not seen as more important than any other.

Background to RYLA

RYLA  began in Queensland in 1959, during the celebrations to commemorate the centenary of Queensland's existence as a separate colony.
Brisbane Rotarians had conceived the idea of holding a youth festival in Brisbane, at which selected young people from all over the state would meet the Royal visitor.
The youth festival was named "Gundoo", an Aboriginal word meaning "Youth corroboree". It took place in September and lasted 10- 12 days.
It is said that by 1971 all Districts in Australia and New Zealand had adopted the  program.  In the same year it was adopted by Rotary International as a world-wide youth activity.
Since then RYLA has spread through several districts in the U.S.A.,Canada, France, India, the Philippines, Korea, Switzerland
